A hybrid format of a film set, performance and temporary residence placed inside deserted factories or unfinished public buildings gathers artists, activists and advocates of new institutional cultural models, potential users, film extras and spectators for a one-day event structured as 8 hours of work, 8 hours of education and 8 hours of rest - a 24-hour camp with public performances, lectures, discussions and a shooting of a film. The series of events Institutions Need to Be Constructed is initiated by the performance collective BADco. organizing in each city a temporary platform of artists and experts all actively engaged in leading, curating or reflecting the models of artistic organizations, collectives and institutions.

The project has been launched in Bergen, Norway (June 2015) with a number of local artists and its second edition is happening in Rijeka on September 26th – 27th 2015. The artists and experts invited to take part in the Rijeka program are Nataša Antulov, Dinko Rupčić, Slaven Tolj, Nebojša Zelić, Aleksandra Stojaković, Jelena Lopatić, Damir Baterelo, Željka Horvat Čeč, Igor Eškinja...

Over the period of 24 hours and on the location of abandoned factories or unfinished cultural centres (in Rijeka and Zagreb, for example) BADco. together with a group of local artists, activist, film extras and spectators intends to stage some problems of relation between artistic production, labour, spectating and resting. The situation and space will be continuously transforming from a film set into a performance space, but also a social, cultural and discussion centre, camp, dormitory, etc. Artistic frame for the event is the theatrical and choreographic reconstruction which returns to the scene of the first film ever shot – Workers Leaving The Lumière Factory in Lyon: the factory gates. The first moving images show workers leaving their workplace. The movement of the workforce from the place of industrial work into the world of film marks the starting point for the problematic relationship between cinema and the portrayal of work. Workers Leaving The Lumière Factory in Lyon was also the inspiration for BADco.’s theatre performance 1 poor and one 0. The experimental film which will be made as a document of Institutions Need to Be Constructed event will thus recapitulate BADco’s 10 year-long research on parallel history of film, work and performance. We are interested in the problematics of infrastructure in the times of crises, organizational and management models of institutions, their responsibility and openness. Our objective is to analyze and critically reflect, from an artistic point of view, the disintegration of institutions faced with austerity measures, lack of their responsibility for the endangered cultural sector as well as transition of institutions from the field of production to the field of presentation. Our intention is to open a discussion about claims to and material connection with infrastructure, site-specific situations, new models for binding social and cultural activities, participatory decision-making process and potential space for the institutionalization of contemporary practices.

Co-produced by: Drugo more Rijeka and Kava-film production. The event also includes lectures and educational program in collaboration with the Upgrade! project organized in partnership with Alliance Operation CityWHW -What, How & for WhomCMS - Center for Peace StudiesAttack.
