“IS THERE LIFE ON STAGE? – Exercises in Terraforming”, 29.05.2013, Zagreb

BADco. invites you to see our newest production IS THERE LIFE ON STAGE? – Exercises in Terraforming at Dance Week Festival!

29.05.2013 22:00 @ Zagreb Dance Center, Ilica 10, Zagreb

BADco.’s new production is an artistic exploration of two connected sets of problems: establishing the minimal conditions for life and the facticity in the theater. Our starting point is the question “What are the consequences of theater’s fictionalization of a reality such as the global environmental crisis?” Therefore our reference horizon spans artistic and media sources ranging from documentary footage of our conquests of outer space, through science-fiction prose and eco-art. The performance has a serial structure whose segments change from occasion to occasion, from venue to venue.

BADco. “Fleshdance”, 17.-19.05.2013, Glyptotheque, Zagreb

We invite you the see the updated choreography by Nikolina Pristaš!

FleshDance

17.-19.05.2013 20:00 @ Glyptotheque, Medvedgradska 2, Zagreb, Croatia

Tickets: here

Choreography: Nikolina Pristaš
Dancers: Pravdan Devlahović/Nikolina Pristaš, Ana Kreitmeyer and Zrinka Užbinec
Dramaturgy: Ivana Ivković, Goran Sergej Pristaš

FleshDance is a choreography in which the tactile potential of surface does not govern the movement but rather the movement makes visible the appearance of surfaces and their qualities. Flesh is not a boundary between the body and external materiality; it is a haptic surface which determines movement by its ability to see by means of tactility, to desire without watching, to dissolve in the moment of sensation and affliction.

05.-23. April 2013
@ Skogen, Masthuggsterrassen 3, Gothenburg, Sweden

Throughout a three week period we’ll run a public program that will include four of our performances, two workshops, a new performative installation work and a series of lectures and performance lectures a.o. by guests: Tor Lindstrand, Anders Paulin and Anders Mossling, and Johan Normark.

Although the program will offer a comprehensive overview of BADco.’s artistic and educational work, the program block starts from BADco.’s recent concerns: on the one hand, artistic explorations of issues of ecology and environment in the theater that open the block with BADco.’s latest performance Is There Life on Stage? – Exercises in Terraforming. On the other hand, concerns with the old medium of television that will be at the center of BADco.’s work during the stay in SKOGEN and take the form of a performative installation TVolution won’t be televised.

The performative installation work in SKOGEN is a follow-up of the installation work BADco. did in 2011 for the Croatian presentation at the 54th Venice Biennale. This initiated a series of investigations and experimental set-ups that the collective is currently developing alongside of its performances and that are dealing with the recontextualisation and remediation of theater performance into other artistic, scholarly and social practices.

SYMPOSIUM: “Broken Performances: Time and (In)Completion”, 21.-24.03.2013, Zagreb

BADco. invites you to the symposium and artistic programme organized in partnership with the Multimedia Institute/MAMA and the Academy of Drama Arts, University of Zagreb

Broken Performances: Time and (In)Completion

21.-24. March 2013 in Zagreb, Croatia

“Broken Performances: Time and (In)Completion” is a proposal to examine relations between the present-day modalities of time and the production of forms of life. The symposium will bring together a number of prominent international scholars and artists to share their thoughts on how to critically address the ways time conditions labor, affect and values, and how this then gets reflected in performance and media. The rise of new precarious forms of work and flexible organization of working time, as well as changes in the content and the nature of work, lead to a corresponding search for balance among the various forms of social time. “Time-scarcity” therefore becomes a relevant topic not only from a social or biological perspective, but also as a dramaturgical and performative problem. Having developed in the 20th century in connection with the principles of Fordism and Taylorism (endless motion, speed of execution, oscillation between order and chaos, the regulated and the coincidental), the development of contemporary performance, especially dance, over the last two decades has reflected the deep changes brought about by post-Fordist modes of labour (cognitive and affective virtuosity, multi-layered temporality, proximity, collaboration processes, openness of work, etc.). In this sense, different choreographic practices should not be understood only as aesthetic practices, but also as wider social processes of distributing bodies in time and space. Simultaneously, the pervasive erosion of differences between film, television, and computers and linked temporal experiences of technologies of work, travel, communication, and vision results in new ideologies of speed and compression, which opens new possibilities to rethink elaborative slowness and strategies of recapitulation in performance.

This symposium and its topic are a continuation of BADco.’s artistic interest to relate performance and time. More concretely, it was motivated by BADco.’s work on the development of imaging technologies and their application in performative settings, and it revolves around inquiry of images and performances of time in the technologically driven production – both in the capitalist economic production, in the work with technologies on-stage and in the work of dance as an old technology.

The symposium is a part of our participation in the project “TIMeSCAPES – Images and performance of time in late capitalism.” TIMeSCAPES is a long-term artistic research and production platform initiated by five cultural organizations: BADco. (HR), Maska (SI), Walking Theory (RS), Science Communications Research (A) and Film-protufilm (HR). It brings together four organizations, whose internationally renowned artistic and cultural practice is rooted in research, publishing and discourse, with one science-oriented organization developing methodologies of artistic research. The double objective is to research and artistically reflect the transversal issue of time that cuts across economy, society and art: structure of working time in different economic contexts, temporal experience in technologies, performative dramaturgies of time, etc.; while at the same time tackling the issue that has acute resonance in cultural and academic contexts across Europe: what should the models and institutions of artistic research be, given the constraints of time, money and mobility that artists face.

The attendant artistic program is organized in collaboration with the Multimedia Institute/MAMA, Academy of Drama Arts – University of Zagreb, POGON  – Zagreb Centre for Independent Culture and Youth, Culture of Change – Student Center, What, How and for Whom/WHW and Zagreb Dance Center.

Concept, organization and coordination: Goran Sergej Pristaš, Jasna Žmak & Tomislav Medak
Production: Lovro Rumiha

“Broken Performances: Time and (In)Completion” is part of TIMeSCAPES, Images and performances of time in late capitalism, a partner project of BADco. (Zagreb), Maska (Ljubljana), Science Communications Research (Vienna), Walking Theory (Belgrade), Film-protufilm (Zagreb) and Academy Of Dramatic Arts, University of Zagreb. With the support of the Culture Programme of the European Union.

BADco. vas poziva da prisustvujete simpoziju i umjetničkom programu organiziranom u suradnji s Multimedijalnim institutom/MAMA i Akademijom dramske umjetnosti Sveučilista u Zagrebu

Suvremena izvedba, prije svega ples, u posljednje dvije dekade odražava duboke promjene postfordističkih načina proizvodnje (kognitivna i afektivna virtuoznost, višeslojna temporalnost, neposrednost, suradnički procesi, otvorenost djela itd.)

21.03.2013
18.00 @ Pogon Jedinstvo Bojan Đorđev: What I have Learned about Capitalism – (beskrajno samo) izvedbeno predavanje

“IS THERE LIFE ON STAGE? – Exercises in Terraforming”, 20.-21.03.2013, Zagreb

BADco. invites you to see:

in Croatian: 20.03.2013 20:00 @ POGON Jedinstvo, Trnjanski nasip bb, Zagreb, Croatia – TICKETS

in English: 21.03.2013 20:00 @ POGON Jedinstvo, Trnjanski nasip bb, Zagreb, Croatia – TICKETS

The performance-series starts out from the idea of terraforming, a hypothetical process of deliberately modifying the atmosphere, temperature, surface topography or ecology of planet, moon or other body to be similar to those of Earth in order to make it habitable by terrestrial organisms. Conceived as serial, made up of individual episodes, the production’s primary interest is to approach and exhaust the topic of establishing new conditions for life and work on stage, networks of relations, ecosystems, forms of life, communities etc. On the one hand we wish to reflect on a heightened sense of urgency to relate the global environmental crisis, on the other hand our aim is to reflect on the status of the real in theater. While theater’s social and political argumentation increasingly exhibits a passion for reality, for the documentary, for the “real people” on stage, theater always inevitably fictionalizes relations between people and things, facts and illusions. And yet, theater always is a collective act of sorts, always a temporary community with its own set of sociopoetic consequences.

The performance has a serial structure whose segments will be changing from occasion to occasion, from venue to venue. The production has  been presented twice as a work-in-progress, while the Rijeka performance in October 2012 opened a cycle of public showings in theaters. The initial project propositions were developed through a number of workshops and collaborations with artists and experts outside of the collective. The performance will remain after its premiere open through continuous workshops with the audience and yet other creators, resulting in yet other segments that will be added to the serial and permutable structure of the performance. It is adaptable to performance and gallery venues, but also other open-air of enclosed public spaces.

Inspired by works and thoughts of Timothy Morton, John W. Campbell, Yona Friedman, Vlado Martek, Heraclitus of Ephesus, Long Distance Hotel and others.

Authors: Pravdan Devlahović (performance), Ivana Ivković (dramaturgy), Ana Kreitmeyer (performance), Tomislav Medak (dramaturgy), Goran Sergej Pristaš (directing), Nikolina Pristaš (performance and choreography), Zrinka Užbinec (performance).

Inspirirano radovima i mišlju Timothyja Mortona, Johna W. Campbella, Yone Friedmana, Vlade Marteka, Heraklita iz Efeza, Long Distance Hotel i drugih.

Ključne riječi: terraforming, ekomimeza, imitiranje, atmosferska ugođenost, biosfera, serija, gravitacijski satovi, instrumentalna koreografija

BADco. is a partner in LABO21 – European Platform for Interdisciplinary Research on Artistic Methodologies.

Our platform partners are: Random Dance (London), Troubleyn (Antwerp) and International Choreographic Arts Centre (Amsterdam).

Under the heading of LABO21, the different partners carry out research on artistic methodologies and how these ‘methods’ can be understood and captured. Despite the variety of the propositions, the partners share the same objectives. They want to enhance and generate new understandings in performing arts by bringing knowledge of performance and dance into conjunction with other fields such as cognitive sciences, biology and technology research, social science and philosophy.

Together with the research, LABO21 also organizes various public events, such as salons, workshops, colloquia, etc.
If you would like to stay informed, please subscribe to the newsletter here!

SYMPOSIUM: “Broken Performances: Time and (In)Completion”, March 21-23, 2013, Zagreb

BADco. extends an open call for contributions for

Broken Performances: Time and (In)Completion

symposium

When and where:

March 21-23, 2013 in Zagreb, Croatia

This symposium and its topic are a continuation of BADco.’s artistic interest to relate performance and time.  Our research is a critical reflection on different structures of time – both in the context of capitalist economic production, in the work with technologies on-stage and in the work of dance as an old technology – aimed at examining practices of not being at the height of time, intentional falling out of step with the fast-paced development and flexibility required by today’s creative economy, creating forms of broken and re-purposed functioning of the performance.

Thus, it brings together four organizations, whose internationally renowned artistic and cultural practice is rooted in research, publishing and discourse, with one science-oriented organization developing methodologies of artistic research. The double objective is to conduct research and artistically reflect the transverse issue of time that cuts across economy, society and art: structure of working time in different economic contexts, temporal experience in technologies, performative dramaturgies of time, etc.; while at the same time tackling the issue that has acute resonance in cultural and academic contexts across Europe: what should the models and institutions of artistic research be, given the constraints of time, money and mobility that artists face.

Who can apply: If you are a scholar or practitioner working on the nexus of performance, media and technology, if you are working in or between any number of fields such as, but not exclusively: performing arts, visual arts, cinema and expanded cinema, human-machine interaction, technological performance, architecture, neuroscience, we are inviting you to present your research interests in form of a presentation and/or participate in the debates at our symposium “Broken Performances: Time and (In)Completion”.

When and where: The symposium will take place on  21-23 March 2013 in Zagreb, Croatia. The artistic program will take place in parallel with the symposium.

What is the topic: “Broken Performances: Time and (In)Completion” is a proposal to examine modalities of convergence between the temporal structures in contemporary society, imagery of time and the production of forms of life. The symposium will bring together a number of scholars and artists to share their thoughts on how to critically address the ways the time conditions labor, affect and values, and how this then gets reflected in performance and media. The introduction of new forms of work and working time organization, as well as changes in the content and the nature of work, lead to a corresponding search for a balance among the various forms of social time. “Time-scarcity” therefore becomes a relevant topic not only from a social or biological perspective, but also as a dramaturgical and performative problem. Having developed in the 20th century in connection with the principles of Fordism (endless motion, speed, oscillation between order and chaos, the regulated and the coincidental), the development of contemporary performance, especially dance over the last two decades has reflected the deep changes brought about by post-Fordian modes of labor (cognitive and affective virtuosity, multi-layered temporality, proximity, collaboration processes, openness of work, etc.). In this sense, different choreographic practices should not be understood only as aesthetic practices, but also as wider social processes of distributing bodies in time and space. Simultaneously, the pervasive erosion of differences between film, television, and computers, and collapsing differences between linked temporal experiences in technologies of work, travel, communication, and vision result in new ideologies of speed and compression, which opens new possibilities to rethink elaborative slowness and strategies of recapitulation in performance.

The themes we’d like to open are:
Image, completion and transformation
Aura of time and temporal disruption
Delay and temporal normativity
Despotism of time and production of negativity
Time, clock and information gathering
Technologies and incompleteness
Performance of broken tools
Magic and (in)completeness
Temporality of image
“Untimely” modes of existence, etc.

The symposium and attendant artistic program will include a.o., contributions by artists and scholars such as Sean Cubitt, Benjamin Noys, Franck Leibovici, Saška Rakef, BADco. etc.

How to apply and when is the deadline: We are looking for contributions of various formats, including but not limited to papers, short presentations, demonstrations and participation in the debate, up to 20 minutes in length. If you want to participate in the symposium, please send us a short note stating your topical interests, discussion points, format, etc. and a short description of your background. While we cannot cover your expenses, we can help you find a convenient travel arrangement and affordable accommodation, and we will do our best to address your interests and provide an insightful debate.

All proposals should be sent in by 10 February 2013 to: badco@badco.hr

You’ll be notified of our decision shortly thereafter.

“Broken Performances: Time and (In)Completion”  is part of TIMeSCAPES, Images and performances of time in late capitalism, a partner project of BADco. (Zagreb), Maska (Ljubljana), Science Communications Research (Vienna), Walking Theory (Belgrade) and Film-protufilm (Zagreb). With the support of the Culture Programme of the European Union.

The symposium and artistic programme are supported by the Ministry of Culture of Republic of Croatia and Office for Education, Culture and Sport of the City of Zagreb.

The production has already been presented twice as a work-in-progress, while the Rijeka performance opens a cycle of public showings in theaters.

Commoning the space @ Truth is concrete / steirischer herbst festival, 26.09.2012, 11-13h, Graz, Austria

BADco. and steirischer herbst festival invite you to a discussion in the framework of Truth is concrete – a 24/7 marathon camp on artistic strategies in politics and political strategies in art

Commoning the space – Interventions, interpellations, strategies

26.09.2012 11:00-13:00 @ White Box, Opernring 7, Graz, Austria

Hosted by BADco.’s Goran Sergej Pristas (HR) & Tomislav Medak (HR)
With: Vjekoslav Gasparovic / pulska grupa (HR), Ana Dzokic & Marc Neelen / STEALTH.unlimited (NL/SRB), Slaven Tolj (HR)

Recently, space – in its various concretions and manifestations – has become the fulcrum of social contestation: occupations of squares, streets, campuses. Encampments against gentrifications, privatisations, commodifications. Test sites for new social compositions, new forms of solidarity, new political openings. The space is both the metonymy and the actual site where the processes of capitalist capture of collective means of existence and secondary exploitation of intense sociality materialise.

Commoning the Space presents and debates the strategies that the cultural activists – artists, cultural workers, architects, students, etc. – are employing to make those processes manifest, to bring the spaces of antagonism to public attention and to mobilise a public around them.

Starting from the experiences of struggle for the common, the contributors will discuss ways to create a space in common, interpellate a public around it, sustain new forms of social organisation that come to inhabit it, scale and explode its transformative momentum beyond its here and now.

BADco. i steirischer herbst festival vas pozivaju na diskusiju u sklopu programa Istina je konkretna – 24/7 maratonski kamp umjetničkih strategija u politici i političkih strategija u umjetnosti

Zajednička prostorna dobra i njihove prakse – Intervencije, interpelacije, strategije

26.09.2012. 11:00-13:00 @ White Box, Opernring 7, Graz, Austrija

Voditelji: Goran Sergej Pristaš i Tomislav Medak (BADco.)
Sudjeluju: Vjekoslav Gašparović (Pulska grupa), Ana Džokić i Marc Neelen (STEALTH.unlimited), Slaven Tolj (Srđ je naš!)

Prostor – u svojim različitim formama i manifestacijama – postao je u posljednje vrijeme žarištem društvenih antagonizama: zauzimanja trgova, ulica, sveučilišta. Frontom protiv procesa gentrifikacije, privatizacije i komercijalizacije. Pokusnim terenom za nove društvene forme organizacije, nove oblike solidarnosti, nova politička
otvaranja.

SYMPOSIUM

01.06.2012.

11:00 – 13:00

The Joy of Co-belonging?

Collaborative practices in the field of the Performing Arts are currently not motivated by a romantic desire for “happily being together” or a projected social or political revolution that would be projected to the future, they are rather concerned with enabling processes of singularisation that are characterized by the polyphony of the involved, by self-organisation and self-determination. Postconsensual practices allow a way of working that respects singular practices, formulations and ways of thinking and recognizes them as a chance, rather than as an obstacle. What are the differences between collaboration, cooperation and collectivism? Can open source-models inspire new modes of working together and of a collective ownership of the means of production?

Introductory lectures by Martina Ruhsam, choreographer (A), Chris Standfest, dramaturge (A), Katherina Zakravsky, theorist (A)

18:00

Screening and discussion:

Chto Delat: “The Builders”

This video project is inspired by the painting “The Builders of Bratsk” (1961) by Viktor Popkov. As a Soviet art critic once accurately noted, “the paintings main theme is the ‘resurgence of life.’” By today, this piece has become an iconographic symbol of self-possessed, concentrated people, not only standing on the brink of great changes, but capable of making sense of this transformation and realizing it.

Igor Grubić: “East Side Story”

Split screen video, one channel shows footage from a gay pride parade in Zagreb, another shows a set of dance sequences performed by lone individuals in the same city. The crowd-conditioned violence detailed in the former, and recorded on its soundtrack, lends an edge to the solo performances in the latter.

02.06.2012.

11:30 – 14:00

Procedures, methodologies, scores

with presentations by Bojana Cvejić, Martina Granić (TASK), OOUR, BADco.

18:00

Book and publication presentations:

Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and Bojana Cvejić: “A Choreographer’s Score”

This book explores four of Rosas’ early works: Fase, Rosas danst Rosas, Elena’s Aria, and Bartók. In addition to sketches, notes, and photographs, it features four DVDs that include interviews with De Keersmaeker, as well as dance demonstrations and extensive video clips from each of the four works.

“SCORES – Publication”

With its own publication – SCORES– the Tanzquartier Wien is for the first time continuing its artistic-theoretical program in another, independent medium. SCORES takes artistic research one step further and opens a performative space within the discursive one – in order to facilitate the sustainability of the discourse practiced in the house and to serve as an invitation to dialogue.

SIMPOZIJ

01.06.2012.

11:00 – 13:00

Radost supripadanja?

Mogu li modeli otvorenog koda inspirirati nove moduse suradnje i kolektivnog vlasništva nad sredstvima proizvodnje?

Uvodna izlaganja održat će Martina Ruhsam, koreografkinja (A), Chris Standfest, dramaturginja (A), Katherina Zakravsky, teoretičarka (A).

18:00

Projekcija video radova i razgovor:

Chto Delat: “The Builders”

02.06.2012.

11:30 – 14:00

Procedure, metodologije, partiture

Prezentacije Bojane Cvejić, Martine Granić (TASK), OOUR-a, BADco.

18:00

Predstavljanje knjige i časopisa:

Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker i Bojana Cvejić: “A Choreographer’s Score”

“SCORES – Publication”

Vlastitiom publikacijom “SCORES” Tanzquartier Wien po prvi puta nastavlja svoj umjetničko-teorijski program posredstvom drugačijeg, samostalnog medija. SCORES gura umjetničko istraživanje korak dalje otvarajući izvedbeni prostor unutar diskurzivnog, s namjerom održavanja diskurzivne prakse u samoj kući i poziva na dijalog.

Actionable Image: Agency of Image, Performance of Body, Apparatus of Spectating – Symposium & Artistic Programme, 15.-17.03.2012 @ mama, Zagreb

The symposium and artistic programme Actionable Image: Agency of Image, Performance of Body, Apparatus of Spectating are a continuation of BADco.’s interest in relating performance and image. More concretely, they were motivated by our recent installation work Responsiblity for Things Seen that was presented in 2011 within the Croatian participation at the Biennale di Venezia. The work required us, in the absence of performers in the exhibition, to pursue the idea of ‘theatre by other means’ and to custom develop a database video system that unfolds a particular nexus of body, image and technology. The work presented in Venice was followed up in February by the performance Black and Forth, a performance that itself is premissed conversely on translation of cinematic procedures by means of theatre.

With Actionable Image we will bring together a number of prominent international and local artists and scholars working in performing arts, visual arts and film to continue with the exploration of experimental encounters between the image and the body — two material modalities of expression whose encounters in our age are predominantly arranged, composed and mediated by means of visual technologies.

We tend to subscribe to the critique of the domination of image: the unebbing repetition of hegemonic representations, the homogenization of mediatized social experience, the habituation of sensory apparatus to technological artifice. However, understanding the encounter of image and body as a field of performance allows us to explore this encounter beyond the adequation of sensory perception to technological apparatus, of social behaviors to reproduced images. That is, as a mis-encounter where incompatibilites between technology and habit, excess of agency on the side of image or on the side of spectators, interventions in the transmission process, strange situations of viewing emerge. This mis-encounter becomes an indeterminate field of negotiation, slippage, mis-performance, deterritorialization and reterritorialization… In short, a field of divergences that are themselves frequent subject to experimentation in art.

Within the scope of this exploration and in the programme of the symposium you’ll be able to hear presentations and talks by Jonathan Beller (US), Andrea Božić (HR/NL), Scott deLahunta (US), Britt Hatzius (DE/UK), Vlatka Horvat (HR/UK), Rosanna Irvine / Katrina Brown (UK), Bojana Kunst (SI), Sonja Leboš (HR), Donna Szoke (CA), Manuel Vason (IT/UK), Jasmina Založnik (SI), Stephen Zepke (NZ/AT) and BADco. You’ll also be able to see an expanded cinema performance by Bruce McClure (US), a performance-lecture by Bojan Đorđev & Siniša Ilić (RS), and see the installation Responsiblity for Things Seen and the performance Black and Forth by BADco. All events are going to be in English.

The symposium and artistic programme are organized by BADco. and in collaboration What, How and for Whom/WHW, Multimedia Institute and SC/Culture of Change.

Mi tendiramo prihvatiti kritiku dominacije slika: kritku nepresetane poplave uvijek istih i istih hegemonijskih prikaza, kritiku homogenizacije medijski posredovanog društvenog iskustva, kritiku navikavanja osjetilnog aparata na tehnološki aparat.

Krećući se unutar tog tematskog preispitivanja u programu simpozija simpoziju izlagat će umjetnici i teoretičari: Jonathan Beller (US), Maaike Bleeker (NL), Andrea Božić (HR/NL), Scott deLahunta (US), Britt Hatzius (DE/UK), Vlatka Horvat (HR/UK), Rosanna Irvine / Katrina Brown (UK), Sonja Leboš (HR), Donna Szoke (CA), Manuel Vason (IT/UK), Jasmina Založnik (SI), Stephen Zepke (NZ/AT) and BADco. A u sklopu umjetničkog programa moći ćete vidjeti izvedbu u mediju proširenog kina američkog umjetnika Brucea McClurea, izvedbeno predavanje Bojana Đorđeva i Siniše Ilića (RS) te vidjeti našu instalaciju Odgovornost za viđeno i predstavu Tamno i natrag. The focus of the exhibition is on a critical discourse based on the thematisation of the procedures of watching, modes of spectating, and the politics of attention, within exhibition conventions and beyond. The title of the exhibition, One Needs to Live Self-Confidently… Watching, a quote taken from Tomislav Gotovac, in many ways summarises Gotovac’s artistic credo, but it is also a demand that governed the decision to engage with his works in the Croatian presentation at the Venice Biennial, as in the new exhibition in Zagreb.

The statement “One Needs to Live Self-Confidently… Watching” is ubiquitous enough to include a demand for us to take Responsibility for Things Seen, which is the title of the site-specific installation by BADco. Conceptualising the absence of performers and the complex field of friction between a stage and exhibition space, BADco.’s installation sets the spatial parameters of the exhibition. On the other hand, Gotovac’s work cannot escape the conditions and procedures set by BADco.’s installation which is concerned with the study of “the power of the image to capture our attention”.

Gallery Nova also presents the work of Slobodan Šijan A Place in the Sun organized by the Multimedia Institute.

Both exhibitions open until 24.03.2012

Opening hours of Gallery Nova:
Tue – Fri: 12:00-20:00
Sat: 11:00-14:00

The exhibition is realised in collaboration with the Croatian Film Clubs’ Association and Zagreb Youth Theatre.

Pozivamo vas na otvorenje instalacije

Odgovornost za viđeno: Priče iz negativnog prostora

uz vodstvo kroz izložbu

28.02.2012. 19:00 @ Galerija Nova, Teslina 7, Zagreb

Konceptualiziranjem odsutnosti izvođača i kompleksnog polja trenja između pozornice i izložbenog prostora, njihova instalacija postavlja prostorne parametre izložbe, uzimajući u obzir selekciju i uvjete Gotovčeve prezentacije.

Galerija Nova također predstavlja rad Slobodana Šijana Mjesto pod suncem u organizaciji Multimedijalnog instituta.

Obje izložbe su otvorene do 24.03.2012.

Radno vrijeme Galerije Nova:
utorak – petak: 12:00-20:00
subota: 11:00-14:00

They ask you in interviews to disclose your oppressions. You expect those questions but deem them too obvious. Your answer is already prepared: “My work is like science, and science is like pornography. You isolate one detail and expose it to observation, repetition, permutation. In the future everyone will watch only their own porn material, their own experimental home movies… This obsession with isolation and detail, this I call scientific method.

Pitaju vas u intervjuu o Vašim opsesijama. Izoliraš jedan detalj i izložiš ga promatranju, ponavljanju, permutacijama. U budućnosti će svi gledati samo svoje porniće, svoje eksperimentalne filmove u kućnom kinu… Ta opsesija izolacijom i detaljem, to ja zovem znanstvenom metodom.”

SYMPOSIUM: “Actionable Image: Agency of Image, Performance of Body, Apparatus of Spectating”, March 16-17, 2012, Zagreb

BADco. extends an open call for contributions for the symposium

Actionable Image: Agency of Image, Performance of Body, Apparatus of Spectating

March 16-17, 2012 in Zagreb, Croatia

This symposium and its topic are a continuation of BADco.’s artistic interest to relate performance and image. More concretely, it was motivated by our most recent work Responsibility for Things Seen that was presented in 2011 within the Croatian participation at the Biennale di Venezia. The work required us, in the absence of performers in the six-months exhibition, to pursue the idea of ‘theater by other means’ and to custom develop a database video system that unfolds a particular nexus of body, image and technology.

Who can apply:
If you are a scholar or practitioner working on the nexus of performance, image and technology, if you are working in or between any number of fields such as, but not exclusively: performing arts, visual arts, cinema and expanded cinema, human-machine interaction, technological performance, architecture, neuroscience, we are inviting you to present your research interests in form of a presentation and/or participate in the debates at our symposium “Actionable Image: Agency of Image, Performance of Body, Apparatus of Spectating”.

When and where:
The symposium will take place on 16-17 March 2011 in Zagreb, Croatia. The  artistic programme will start on the 15th.

What is the topic:
With “Actionable Image” we propose to explore the experimental encounters between the image and the body — two modalities of organized materiality, agency and receptivity affecting each other, two modes of expression whose encounters in our age are predominantly arranged, composed and mediated by means of visual technologies.

We tend to subscribe to the critique of the domination of image and the scopic regime: the unebbing repetition of hegemonic representations, the homogenization of mediatized social experience, the habituation of sensory apparatus to technological artifice. However, understanding the encounter of image and body as a field of performance allows us to explore this encounter beyond the adequation of sensory perception to technological apparatus, of social behaviors to reproduced images. A mis-encounter where incompatibilites between technology and habit, excess of agency on the side of image or on the side of spectators, interventions in the transmission process, strange situations of viewing emerge, that encounter becomes an indeterminate field of negotiation, slippage, misperformance, deterritorialization and reterritorialization… In short, a field of divergences that are themselves frequent subject to experimentation in art.
With this other scene of image in mind, we calls for contributions that will bring their analysis to bear on situations of problematic spectating, strange apparatuses and dispositifs of viewing, agency of images, strategies of performing images and other issues relevant to the nexus of body, image and technology.

The symposium and attendant artistic programme will include a.o., contributions by artists and scholars such as Jonathan Beller, Maaike Bleeker, Vlatka Horvat, Stephen Zepke and BADco.

What are the keywords:
performance and image, performed image, image in performance, image and corporeality, agency of image, actionable image, algorithmic cinema, image and interface, iconicity of image, apparatuses and dispositifs of viewing, cinematic viewing vs theatrical viewing, image and presence/absence…

How to apply and when is the deadline:
We are looking for contributions of various formats, including but not limited to papers, short presentations, demonstrations and participation in the debate, up to 30 minutes in length. If you want to participate in the symposium, please send us a short note stating your topical interests, discussion points, format, etc. and a short description of your background. While we cannot cover your expenses, we can help you find convenient travel arrangement and affordable accommodation, and we will do our best to address your interests and provide an insightful debate.

All proposals should be sent in by 10 February 2012 to: tom@badco.hr.
You’ll be notified of our decision shortly thereafter.

Publication:
A special issue of Frakcija Performing Arts Journal will accompany the symposium. We are looking for contributions of those taking part in the symposium, but also others who cannot join us in Zagreb but are researching the topic in academic or artistic formats. Articles, essays and artist’s page(s) proposals will be considered. The submission deadline is March 2, publication June 2012. All proposals (and any questions on submission) should be sent to: ivana@badco.hr

The symposium and attendant artistic program are organized in collaboration with Multimedia Institute/MAMA and the curatorial collective What, How and for Whom/WHW.

The symposium Actionable Image: Agency of Image, Performance of Body, Apparatus of Spectating is part of LABO21 – European Platform for Interdisciplinary Research on Artistic Methodologies, a partner project of BADco. (Zagreb), BUDA Arts Center (Kortrijk), Laboratorium (Antwerp) and University of Circus and Dance (Stockholm). With the support of the Culture Programme of the European Union.

BADco. “Is There Life on Stage? – Remainder” @ zekaem, 15.12.2011 & “BADroom (or BADco. feat Podroom): A Peer Discussion on Self-Organization” @ livingroomfestival, 19.12.2011

BADco. invites you to the presentation of

Is There Life on Stage? – Remainder

15.12.2011 20:00 @  Zagreb Youth Theater, Zagreb

Remainder is the first of a series of performances in the process of the making of BADco.’s new production Is There Life on Stage?. A project that will reach its final phase at the end of 2012, Is There Life on Stage? is an exploration at the intersection of two problem fields: the environment and realism in theater. The work starts from two questions: How to stage an ecosystem? What is the status of reality and document in the isolated ecosystem of the theater?
For the first, announcing performance of the project eight BADco. members have invited eight colleagues to develop a series of micro-performances that will direct the future directions of the production: Goran Ferčec, Oliver Frljić, Aleksandra Janeva, Dubravko Mihanović, Goran Petercol, Jasenko Rasol, Željka Sančanin, Tanja Vrvilo

In co-production with Perforations

The presentation was prepared at the Culture Center Novi Zagreb and Dance Center TALA.

On invitation of ekscena BADco. is taking part in this year’s Living Room Festival as it happens in Berlin, Madrid, Brussels and Zagreb.

BADroom (or BADco. feat Podroom): A Peer Discussion on Self-Organization

19.12.2011 20:00 @ http://livingroomfestival.wordpress.com/

A self-organized art festival provides an opportunity to discuss artistic self-organization. Thus, we propose to our peers, our colleagues — the participating artists and cultural workers, be they with us physically or through the internet — a discussion starting from a historic document that will serve us as a script. This document is a discussion between the Artistic Worker Co-operative “Podroom” that was published in the first issue of their samizdat “Prvi broj” (“The First Issue”). After three years of running the artist-run gallery “Podroom” in the period 1978-1980, artists Goran Trbuljak, Mladen Stilinović, Sanja Iveković, Dalibor Martinis, Goran Petercol, Ivan Dorogi, Antun Maračić, Boris Demur and Vlado Martek retrospectively discuss the reasons that have lead them to self-organize their own exhibitions, to question the existing institutional setups, to advocate labor rights and to deal with a number of broader issues that deal with the framing of artistic practice. Based on this historic document and questions it suggests, we would like to propose to you, our fellow artists, a discussion on the present moment and present framing of artistic practice.

The discussion based on RZU “Podroom” was concieved in the framework of the project “Removed from the Crowd”, Institute for Duration, Location and Variables (DeLVe), and was originally staged on invitation by the curators Ivana Bago and Antonia Majača at the exhibition “Political Practices of (Post) Yugoslav Art” in the Museum “25. Maj” in Belgrade on the 30th of November 2009. The discussion will be in English.

BADco. vas poziva na prezentaciju projekta

Ima li života na sceni? – Preostalo

15.12.2011 20:00 @ zekaem, Zagreb

Predstava nastaje u koprodukciji s Perforacijama

BADroom (iliti BADco. feat Podroom): Kolegijalni razgovor o samoorganizaciji uz historijski predložak

19.12.2011. 20:00 @ http://livingroomfestival.wordpress.com/

Maj u Beogradu 30. novembra 2009. Razgovor će biti vođen na engleskom.

BADco. @ 54. La Biennale di Venezia, Arsenale, 04.06. – 27.11. 2011

By invitation of the curators’ collective What, How & for Whom/WHW the Croatian exhibition at the 54th Venice Biennale taking place 4th June to 27th November 2011 is presenting the work of conceptual artist Antonio G. Lauer (a.k.a. Tom Gotovac) and performing arts collective BADco.

BADco. "Responsibility for Things Seen" @ Biennale, 2011, photo: Ivan Kuharić

As part of the Croatian exhibition at the 54th Venice Biennale BADco. is presenting a site-specific installation and intervention titled Responsibility for Things Seen: Tales in Negative Space, the first phase of a multi-segment project we will conclude with a premiere at the Zagreb Youth Theater in early 2012. The central concern of the project is the issue of mediated responsibility, relating to events we witness in images and different modes of spectating. The Venice installation, conceived as theater by other means, will construct the field of friction between the power of images to engage our collective imagination, to open or shut the horizon of the future, and different modes of spectating – opening a potential space of critical and transformative work of spectating.

We are inspired by the fact that our work is presented alongside the work of Tomislav Gotovac, an artist with whom we share an intuition that there is a continuity between seeing and creating, and an interest for the internal material organization of the artistic reality – what the artist had called “the steel mash”.

The exhibition organized by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia is realized in collaboration with Croatian film clubs’ association and Zagreb Youth Theater.

BADco. na 54. venecijanskom bijenalu

4. lipnja do 27. studenoga 2011. u Arsenalima

Whatever Dance Toolbox is now released!

Whatever Dance Toolbox is a set of software tools designed for the analysis and development of dance and movement. Six tools included in the suite can help dancers and choreographers devise, develop and rehearse dance, but can also be used in dance education or by non-dancers to explore movement. The suite is a product of a long-standing collaboration between BADco. and German human-machine interface developer and artist Daniel Turing, and it reflects some of the mutual concerns with the dancer-computer interaction and choreographic thinking.

DANCE WORKSHOPS: Algorithmic Reflections of Choreography: From Choreography to Software and Back (2-5 April 2011, Zagreb)

Open Call for Dance Workshops

Workshop I: Synchronous Objects (teacher: Norah Zuniga Shaw, 2-3 April 2011)

Workshop II: Whatever Dance Toolbox (teachers: choreographers and dramaturges of BADco., 4-5 April 2011)

Who can apply: If you are a dancer, choreographer or technology developer looking to acquire practical experience of working with software tools in creating movement and choreography, you can apply to participate in either one or both of the workshops within the “Algorithmic Reflections of Choreography: From Choreography to Software and Back” event.

What is the context: Preceding the workshops on 1 April there will be a one-day symposium bringing together international artists, technologists, methodologists and educators who have been working on developing software tools in the context of choreographic work of The Forsythe Company, Emio Greco | PC, Deborah Hay Company and BADco. The symposium and workshop mark the release of BADco.’s choreographic software suite Whatever Dance Toolbox, created in collaboration with the German developer Daniel Turing.

More on individual workshops and teachers you can find below.

How to apply and when is the deadline: The deadline for applying is 1 March 2011. The number of participants is limited to 15 for each workshop.

You can apply by sending an e-mail to: lovro [at ]badco [dot] hr, stating your interests and including a short bio describing your background.

More on the workshops:

Workshop I: Synchronous Objects (teacher: Norah Zuniga Shaw, 2-3 April 2011)

Co-creative director with William Forsythe for Synchronous Objects, Norah Zuniga Shaw leads workshops for dancers and interdisciplinary groups focusing on the choreographic visualizations as catalysts for new creativity and collaboration. Participants experience the deep structures and creative scoring ideas contained within William Forsythe’s masterwork A One Flat Thing, reproduced through movement and drawing exercises. Themes that are addressed include rule-based art making practices, integration of analytical and creative practices, and connections between computing ideas and dancing ideas. In addition to generating moving ideas, participants are given tools for analyzing performance throughout the workshop, and using these observations and documents as jumping off points for new creation.

Norah Zuniga Shaw is an artist and researcher whose work centers on choreographic knowledge as a locus for interdisciplinary and intercultural creativity. She is director for dance & technology at the Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design (ACCAD). Shaw’s most recent project with William Forsythe and Maria Palazzi, Synchronous Objects, has received numerous honors including features in the New York Times and Communication Arts.

Workshop II: Whatever Dance Toolbox (teachers: choreographers and dramaturges of BADco., 4-5 April 2011)

Choreographers and dramaturges of BADco. will guide you through a practical, problem-driven process through their accumulated experience in developing and working with Whatever Dance Toolbox. The workshop will focus in particular on three aspects of its application in dance and choreography: generating and analyzing individual dance material, generating and analyzing the choreography that transpires between the dancers’ bodies, and analyzing the split attention produced by the Toolbox. All workshop participants will receive a free copy of WDT to continue working with the tools.

BADco. is a performance collective based in Zagreb, Croatia. The artistic core of the group is: Pravdan Devlahović, Ivana Ivković, Ana Kreitmeyer, Tomislav Medak, Goran Sergej Pristaš, Nikolina Pristaš and Zrinka Užbinec. SYMPOSIUM: Algorithmic Reflections of Choreography: From Choreography to Software and Back (1 April 2011, Zagreb)

– followed by four days of workshops and installations of The Forsythe Company’s Synchronous Objects and BADco.’s Whatever Dance Toolbox - click here for more info on the workshops!

Open Call for Presentations

Who can apply: If you are a dancer, choreographer or an expert working with choreography interested in developing or reflecting on the application of software tools in choreographic work and teaching, we are inviting you to present your insights and research interests, and participate in the debates, at our symposium “Algorithmic Reflections of Choreography: From Choreography to Software and Back”.

When and where: The symposium will take place on 1 April 2011 in Zagreb, Croatia.

What are the topics: The purpose of the symposium is to bring together in a not-too-formal setting international artists, technologists, methodologists and educators who have been working on developing software tools in the context of choreographic work in order to discuss following issues:

  • how can such technological tools support the creation process;
  • what effects can they have on dance performances;
  • what knowledge can they produce and transfer;
  • how can they be used in documenting/archiving/preserving dance works;
  • can we detect traces of digital environments in choreographies that were not made with technological tools.

The symposium will include contributions by developers and practitioners working on tools developed for The Forsythe Company, Emio Greco | PC, Deborah Hay Company and BADco.

The symposium marks the release of BADco.’s choreographic software suite Whatever Dance Toolbox, created in collaboration with the German developer Daniel Turing. It will be followed by four days of workshops and installations of The Forsythe Company’s Synchronous Objects, facilitated by Norah Zuniga Shaw, and BADco.’s Whatever Dance Toolbox, facilitated by choreographers and dramaturges of BADco.

WORKSHOP Recapitulations 24.-28.01.2011 @ POU Zagreb

BADco. invites you to take part in our choreographic workshop!

Recapitulations

24.-28.01.2011 10:00-14:30 @ POU Zagreb, Ulica Grada Vukovara 68, Zagreb

Leading the workshop: Ana Kreitmeyer, Nikolina Pristaš, Goran Sergej Pristaš and Zrinka Užbinec

In our ten years of work, throughout a series of theater productions, BADco. has alternated thematic scopes, dramaturgical approaches, dance procedures and technological processes. And yet, in this continuous production of the divergent, some strategies in the making of our productions and some operations in their performance have stayed constant and have gradually sedimented into knowledge BADco. conveys through workshops. The workshop Recapitulations will focus on the choreographic procedures, production of dance and analysis. We will spend a week investigating: different ways the body and the (virtual) objects relate, the possibilities of choreographic exhausting of that relationship, the settling in of dance into a world of objects and the analysis of the whole process. Extension of objects in the body, introduction of objects’ qualities into the body, traces, configuration of attention, inertia, parallel logics in the body – are only some of the ideas we will cover in the workshop.

Recapitulations workshop is for dance professionals and those who wish to experience and reflect on the process of creating a choreography.

Participation is free of charge. Apply by 21.01.2011 to:

Rekapitulacije

24.-28.01.2011. 10:00-14:30 @ Centar za kulturu POU Zagreb, Ulica Grada Vukovara 68, Zagreb

Voditelji radionice: Ana Kreitmeyer, Nikolina Pristaš, Goran Sergej Pristaš i Zrinka Užbinec

nikolina@badco.hr

Ostvareno u suradnji s ekscenom.

BADco. Point of Convergence 26.-28.11.2010 @ MSU, Zagreb

BADco. continues the celebration of our 10 years together with the premiere of a new choreography by Ana Kreitmeyer and Zrinka Uzbinec!

Point of Convergence

world premiere:
26.11.2010 20:00 @ Museum of Contemporary Art, Zagreb

additional performances:
27.-28.11.2010 22:00 @ Museum of Contemporary Art, Zagreb
(note different time!)

Point of Convergence is a choreographic experiment persisting in the excess where communication in dance and about dance oscillates between what can and what cannot be stated: insisting on choreographic means – structuring the intensity of communication’s noise – producing the specific conditions of dialogue in dance and dialogue on dance. To understand one another, it is necessary to negotiate the terms of understanding.

The authors Zrinka Užbinec and Ana Kreitmeyer implement this negotiation of the terms of understanding, an understanding that is yet to come to understanding, through a series of mutations of dance expressions. A simple initial choreography is communicated to each other through a series of dance negotiations, understandings and misunderstandings through which newly established gestures lose their meaning, and casual glances and signs of a hand become intensities that are changing the context, transforming meanings into an excess.

During this process of “rough” translation the dance expression of one is exposed to a constant and continuous dance interpretation of the other, creating a choreographic situation that is no longer located on the bodies, but between the two bodies. Attempts at negotiation, at translation, misconstructions, explanations one did not request, disagreements, an attempt at coexisting. The point of convergence is left to the spectators’ gaze where, in the illusory distance, two parallel lines intersect at infinity.

BADco. "Point of Convergence", 2010

BADco. nastavlja veliku proslavu 10 godina rada jos jednom premijerom! Nova koreografija Ane Kreitmeyer i Zrinke Užbinec!

Točka sabiranja

praizvedba:
26.11.2010. 20:00 @ Muzej suvremene umjetnosti, Zagreb

reprizne izvedbe:
27.-28.11.2010. 22:00 @ Muzej suvremene umjetnosti, Zagreb

Autorice Zrinka Užbinec i Ana Kreitmeyer to pregovaranje o uvjetima razumijevanja, razumijevanja koje tek treba doći do sporazumijevanja, provode kroz seriju mutacija plesnog izraza. Jednostavnu početnu koreografiju komuniciraju jedna drugoj kroz plesne pregovore, sporazumijevanja i nesporazume tijekom kojih tek uspostavljene geste gube značenja, a povremeni pogledi i znakovi dlana postaju intenziteti koji mijenjaju kontekst, pretvaraju značenja u suvišak.
