BADco. “Is There Life on Stage? – Remainder” @ zekaem, 15.12.2011 & “BADroom (or BADco. feat Podroom): A Peer Discussion on Self-Organization” @ livingroomfestival, 19.12.2011

BADco. invites you to the presentation of

Is There Life on Stage? – Remainder

15.12.2011 20:00 @  Zagreb Youth Theater, Zagreb

Remainder is the first of a series of performances in the process of the making of BADco.’s new production Is There Life on Stage?. A project that will reach its final phase at the end of 2012, Is There Life on Stage? is an exploration at the intersection of two problem fields: the environment and realism in theater. The work starts from two questions: How to stage an ecosystem? What is the status of reality and document in the isolated ecosystem of the theater?
For the first, announcing performance of the project eight BADco. members have invited eight colleagues to develop a series of micro-performances that will direct the future directions of the production: Goran Ferčec, Oliver Frljić, Aleksandra Janeva, Dubravko Mihanović, Goran Petercol, Jasenko Rasol, Željka Sančanin, Tanja Vrvilo

In co-production with Perforations

The presentation was prepared at the Culture Center Novi Zagreb and Dance Center TALA.

BADroom (or BADco. feat Podroom): A Peer Discussion on Self-Organization

19.12.2011 20:00 @ http://livingroomfestival.wordpress.com/

A self-organized art festival provides an opportunity to discuss artistic self-organization. Thus, we propose to our peers, our colleagues — the participating artists and cultural workers, be they with us physically or through the internet — a discussion starting from a historic document that will serve us as a script. This document is a discussion between the Artistic Worker Co-operative “Podroom” that was published in the first issue of their samizdat “Prvi broj” (“The First Issue”). After three years of running the artist-run gallery “Podroom” in the period 1978-1980, artists Goran Trbuljak, Mladen Stilinović, Sanja Iveković, Dalibor Martinis, Goran Petercol, Ivan Dorogi, Antun Maračić, Boris Demur and Vlado Martek retrospectively discuss the reasons that have lead them to self-organize their own exhibitions, to question the existing institutional setups, to advocate labor rights and to deal with a number of broader issues that deal with the framing of artistic practice. Based on this historic document and questions it suggests, we would like to propose to you, our fellow artists, a discussion on the present moment and present framing of artistic practice.

The discussion based on RZU “Podroom” was concieved in the framework of the project “Removed from the Crowd”, Institute for Duration, Location and Variables (DeLVe), and was originally staged on invitation by the curators Ivana Bago and Antonia Majača at the exhibition “Political Practices of (Post) Yugoslav Art” in the Museum “25. Maj” in Belgrade on the 30th of November 2009. The discussion will be in English.

BADco. vas poziva na prezentaciju projekta

Ima li života na sceni? – Preostalo

15.12.2011 20:00 @ zekaem, Zagreb

Predstava nastaje u koprodukciji s Perforacijama

BADroom (iliti BADco. feat Podroom): Kolegijalni razgovor o samoorganizaciji uz historijski predložak

19.12.2011. 20:00 @ http://livingroomfestival.wordpress.com/

Maj u Beogradu 30. novembra 2009. Razgovor će biti vođen na engleskom.

BADco. @ 54. La Biennale di Venezia, Arsenale, 04.06. – 27.11. 2011

By invitation of the curators’ collective What, How & for Whom/WHW the Croatian exhibition at the 54th Venice Biennale taking place 4th June to 27th November 2011 is presenting the work of conceptual artist Antonio G. Lauer (a.k.a. Tom Gotovac) and performing arts collective BADco.

BADco. "Responsibility for Things Seen" @ Biennale, 2011, photo: Ivan Kuharić

As part of the Croatian exhibition at the 54th Venice Biennale BADco. is presenting a site-specific installation and intervention titled Responsibility for Things Seen: Tales in Negative Space, the first phase of a multi-segment project we will conclude with a premiere at the Zagreb Youth Theater in early 2012. The central concern of the project is the issue of mediated responsibility, relating to events we witness in images and different modes of spectating. The Venice installation, conceived as theater by other means, will construct the field of friction between the power of images to engage our collective imagination, to open or shut the horizon of the future, and different modes of spectating – opening a potential space of critical and transformative work of spectating.

We are inspired by the fact that our work is presented alongside the work of Tomislav Gotovac, an artist with whom we share an intuition that there is a continuity between seeing and creating, and an interest for the internal material organization of the artistic reality – what the artist had called “the steel mash”.

For a detailed description of Responsibility for Things Seen: Tales in Negative Space and full credits see: BADco_Croatia_2011

The exhibition organized by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia is realized in collaboration with Croatian film clubs’ association and Zagreb Youth Theater.

BADco. na 54. venecijanskom bijenalu

4. lipnja do 27. studenoga 2011. u Arsenalima

light design: Goran Petercol

2 is intimate – it unites two different bodies, 2 different natures of movement. 2 is an attempt to keep in contact in spite of intentionally imposed obstacles: to shut one’s eyes, to listen to the body of the other and find the mute language of communication. To be blind on stage is not a metaphorical denial of the visual but a search for a more intense sensibility to the vibrations that fill the space around the dancers. 2 is a struggle for stability through the minimal mechanisms that support the structure: breathing, sounds, vibrations of the air, memory of space, feeling for the invisible other.

music: Ivan Marušić – Klif

light design: Miljenko Bengez
Solo Me is a solo for two performers – choreographers; a performance in which two different choreographic solo materials, opinions, processes come in touch with each other. Although both solos were made individually and can be performed as such, the idea of juxtaposition, adjoining and refraction of one material in another seemed very interesting to be researched.

Solo in A Major, op. 69 by Pravdan Devlahović initiates questions of defining the space surrounding his body (as a space that is being watched) by minimal alternations of movement which, in elaboration, gradually infect the whole body. Pravdan walks his choreographic material, passing through different points in the space in a way that the moment he finds the right spot he abandons it in search for a new one. By doing so he exposes his body to various perspectives in relation to the viewers, incorporating this consciousness of being watched all the time as an integral part of the performance.

And this is no longer a beginning by Nikolina Pristaš is an attempt to thematize the act of (self)beginning. Thinking about the idea of multiple beginnings, reiterated attempts at always different quality of more or less the same movements brought her to the idea of writing one choreographic sentence in different (choreographic) fonts. The chosen fonts found their corporeal equivalents by means of different perspecitives, technical foci, formal strategies and orientations which, in process, redefine the differences in affective result in relation to the main sentence.

Solo u A-duru, op. 69 Pravdana Devlahovića inicira pitanjima definiranja prostora oko tijela i gledanog prostora minimalnim promjenama koje svojom elaboracijom postepeno inficiraju cijelo tijelo.

In 1 poor and one 0 BADco. returns to the scene of the first film ever shot – Workers Leaving The Lumiere Factory: the factory gates. The first moving images ever made show workers leaving their workplace. The movement of the workforce from the place of industrial work into the world of film: the starting point for the problematic relationship between cinema and the portrayal of work.

From its outset cinema tended to leave the manual labor out of the picture, focusing rather on atomized stories of individual workers once they have left their workplace: their romances, their transgressions, their destinies in the course of world events. Cinema starts where work ends.

Starting from these initial images, 1 poor and one 0 sets about exploring the multiple ways of leaving the work behind. What happens when you get tired? When is the work we devote ourselves to exhausted? What comes after work? More work? What happens when there is no more work? What is the complicity between the history of contemporary dance and the history of post-industrialization?

1 poor and one 0 is a twofold performance: while the performers develop the manifold forms of dissolution of the working subject before the audience, the audience is slowly drawn into a process of
transformation: from the popular medium of cinema to the political theater of populism. Theater exhausted in moving images, images exhausted in the theater of movement. A change of perspective.

Teatar iscrpljen u pokretnim slikama, slike iscrpljene u teatru pokreta. Perspektiva se mijenja.

Presentation of “League of Time” (work in progress) 26.03.2009 in Istanbul

Presentation within SEAS events in Istanbul of our 2009 production League of Time (work in progress)!

“A literature that is alive does not live by yesterday’s clock, nor by today’s, but by tomorrow’s. It is a sailor sent aloft: from the masthead he can see foundering ships, icebergs, and maelstroms still invisible from the deck. He can be dragged down from the mast and put to tending the boilers or working the capstan, but that will not change anything: the mast will remain, and the next man on the masthead will see what the first has seen.
In a storm, you must have a man aloft. We are in the midst of a storm today, and SOS signals come from every side. Only yesterday a writer could calmly stroll along the deck, clicking his Kodak (genre); but who will want to look at landscapes and genre scenes when the world is listing at a forty-five-degree angle, the green maws are gaping, the hull is creaking? Today we can look and think only as men do in the face of death: we are about to die- and what did it all mean? How have we lived? If we could start over again, from the beginning, what would we live by? And for what? What we need in literature today are vast philosophic horizons- horizons seen from mastheads, from airplanes; we need the most ultimate, the most fearsome, the most fearless ‘Why?’ and ‘What next?’.”
Yevgeny Zamyatin, 1923

In its new production the Zagreb-based performance collective BADco. commences another complex operation, this time an operation in time. At the beginning of the new century we ask ourselves: What happens to all future times whose time has run out? What happens to futures that never took place? What to the utopias that have become everyday? What is the time remaining?

Departing from a wide circle of artistic sources (Kafka’s America, Mayakovsky’s “American” and futurist poetry, Bogdanov’s Red Star, early Soviet SF, East European ufology, American psychedelic art), BADco. embarks on an ecstatic journey through time, taking the audience by means of time through a series of multiplications, simultaneities, non-linear structures, surplus of time and impossible spaces.

Konstantin Melnikov's "Sonata of Sleep"

Konstantin Melnikov's "Sonata of Sleep"

Prezentacija u sklopu SEAS dogadjanja u Istanbulu našeg novog projekta Liga vremena (rad u nastajanju)!

Today we can look and think only as men do in the face of death: we are about to die- and what did it all mean? How have we lived? If we could start over again, from the beginning, what would we live by? And for what? What we need in literature today are vast philosophic horizons- horizons seen from mastheads, from airplanes; we need the most ultimate, the most fearsome, the most fearless ‘Why?’ and ‘What next?’.

Yevgeny Zamyatin, 1923

The new BADco. production – shown first at the Rijeka Summer Nights festival, followed by performances in Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Great Britain – presents a complex operation in time. At the beginning of the new century we ask ourselves: What happens to all future times whose time has run out? What happens when the founding social narratives no longer offer the key to understanding reality?

Embark on a theatrical journey through parables of the future and recapitulations of the past, through an archeology of utopian tales and visions never realized. Kafka’s parallel world of an imaginary “Amerika” he never had the chance to visit, the futuristic vision of Mayakovski’s “The Flying Proletarian”. A flight two hundred years into the future during which you will meet the surviving members of the League of Time: an ufologist, a pilot, a man-machine and a cosmonaut, get a bird’s eye view of the Red Square, hear slogans of biocosmists and peak into American psychedelic art.

Authors: Pravdan Devlahović (performance and choreography), Ivana Ivković (dramaturgy), Ana Kreitmeyer (performance and choreography), Tomislav Medak (dramaturgy and performance), Goran Sergej Pristaš (directing), Nikolina Pristaš (choreography), Zrinka Užbinec (performance and choreography).

Collaborators: Helge Hinteregger (sound), Tor Lindstrand (set design), Daniel Turing (software), Silvio Vujičić (costume design), Alan Vukelić (light design), Jasmin Dasović (sound technician).

Company manager: Lovro Rumiha

Based on texts and works by Franz Kafka, Vladimir Mayakovski, Aleksei Kapitonovich Gastev, Július Koller, Georg Schoelhammer, Factory of the Excentric Actor, U.S.C.O., Konstantin Melnikov, Joe Meek, Stano Filko, Owen Hatherley

Coproducers: BADco., Drugo more, Croatian National Theater Ivan pl. Zajc
Supported by: Zagreb City Council for Education, Culture and Sport; Ministry of Culture of Republic of Croatia
The production was prepared at the Culture Center Novi Zagreb and Prostor+ in Rijeka.

The League of Time is commissioned by Black/North SEAS, an initiative of Intercult, Sweden and is funded by EU Culture 2007-2013.

Premijera “Lige vremena” 09.-10.07.2009. @ Hartera, Rijeka

Jevgenij Zamjatin, 1923.

Predstava koju će kazališna skupina BADco. premijerno – prije izvedbi u Danskoj, Švedskoj, Norveškoj i Velikoj Britaniji – predstaviti na Riječkim ljetnim noćima, otvara kompleksnu operaciju u vremenu.

Kafkin paralelni svijet imaginarne “Amerike” koju nije imao prilike posjetiti i futurističku viziju “Letećeg proletera” Majakovskog. Let dvjesto godina u budućnost tijekom kojeg ćete upoznati preživjele članove Lige vremena: ufologa, pilota, čovjeka-mašinu i kozmonauta, panoramski preletjeti preko Crvenog trga, čuti parole biokozmista i zaviriti u američku psihodeličnu umjetnost.

Autori: Pravdan Devlahović (izvedba i koreografija), Ivana Ivković (dramaturgija), Ana Kreitmeyer (izvedba i koreografija), Tomislav Medak (dramaturgija i izvedba), Goran Sergej Pristaš (režija), Nikolina Pristaš (koreografija), Zrinka Užbinec (izvedba i koreografija).

Suradnici: Helge Hinteregger (oblikovanje zvuka), Tor Lindstrand (scenografija), Daniel Turing (software), Silvio Vujičić (kostimi), Alan Vukelić (oblikovanje svjetla), Jasmin Dasović (tonski tehničar).

Producent: Lovro Rumiha

Temeljeno na tekstovima i radovima Franza Kafke, Vladimira Majakovskog, Alekseja Kapitonovića Gasteva, Júliusa Kollera, Georga Schoelhammera, Fabrike ekscentričnog glumca, U.S.C.O., Konstantina Melnikova, Joea Meeka, Stana Filka, Owena Hatherleya

Man.Chair – BADco. feat. Damir Bartol Indoš

08.12.2009 20:00, Zagreb’s Center for Independent Culture and Youth, Jedinstvo hall, Savski nasip, Zagreb

The research for the piece Man.Chair was based on the repetitive capacity of authentic performance Man-Chair, first time performed in 1982 by Damir Bartol Indoš. BADco. wanted to reconstruct, remake, remix and upgrade the original peace (which is screened on video) using dance improvisations and individual approaches of dancers towards the technical and semiotic characteristics of the first performance Man-Chair. The aim was to build the theatrical structure from the performance art piece (which was never meant to be repeated) through the dance variations.

in the program of EAST-DANCE-ACADEMY What to Affirm? What to Perform?

EAST-DANCE-ACADEMY (EDA) is a joint project by Center For Drama Art (Zagreb), National Dance Center (Bucharest), Maska (Ljubljana), Tanzquartier (Vienna) and Allianz Kulturstifftung. The project aims at affirmation of the situation as well as the modes of historical appearance of choreographic thought within non-institutional conditions i.e. it is a research into the ways dance developed specific strategies of self-organization, self-education and political activation. The two-year program What to Affirm? What to Perform? is in the framework of EDA.

Čovjek.Stolac – BADco. feat.

Afirmira situacije i načine povijesnog pojavljivanja koreografskog mišljenja u neinstitucionalnim uvjetima, odnosno istražuje načine kojima je ples razvijao specifične strategije samoorganizacije, samoedukacije i političke aktivacije. U sklopu EDA nastao je i dvogodišnji program Što afirmirati ? Što izvoditi?.

Based on texts and works by Franz Kafka, Vladimir Mayakovski, Aleksei Kapitonovich Gastev, Julius Koller, Georg Schoelhammer, Factory of the Excentric Actor, U.S.C.O., Konstantin Melnikov, Joe Meek, Stano Filko, Owen Hatherley

The new BADco. production – shown first at the Rijeka Summer Nights festival, followed by performances in Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Great Britain in 2009 – presents a complex operation in time.

Kafka’s parallel world of an imaginary Amerika he never had the chance to visit, the futuristic vision of Mayakovski’s The Flying Proletarian. A flight two hundred years into the future during which you will meet the surviving members of the League of Time: an ufologist, a pilot, a man-machine and a cosmonaut,
get a bird’s eye view of the Red Square, hear slogans of biocosmists and peak into American psychedelic art.

Temeljeno na tekstovima i radovima Franza Kafke, Vladimira Majakovskog, Alekseja Kapitonovića Gasteva, Juliusa Kollera, Georga Schoelhammera, Fabrike ekscentričnog glumca, U.S.C.O., Konstantina Melnikova, Joea Meeka, Stana Filka, Owena Hatherleya

Kafkin paralelni svijet imaginarne Amerike koju nije imao prilike posjetiti i futurističku viziju Letećeg proletera Majakovskog. Let dvjesto godina u budućnost tijekom kojeg ćete upoznati preživjele članove Lige vremena: ufologa, pilota, ženu-mačinu i kozmonauta, panoramski preletjeti preko Crvenog trga, čuti parole biokozmista i zaviriti u američku psihodeličnu umjetnost.

SEMI-INTERPRETATIONS or how to explain contemporary dance to an undead hare

04.09.2010 @ HKD na Sušaku, Rijeka

a pre-premiere presentation in the framework of Zoom festival by Drugo more

“I don’t know how things stand. I know neither who I am nor what I want, but others say they know on my behalf, others, who define me, link me up, make me speak, interpret what I say, and enroll me. Whether I am a storm, a rat, a rock, a lake, a lion, a child, a worker, a gene, a slave, the unconscious, or a virus, they whisper to me, they suggest, they impose an interpretation of what I am and what I could be .”
Bruno Latour, The Pasteurization of France

Composition and modulations: Nikolina Pristaš
Notes and blackboxing: Goran Sergej Pristaš
Collaborators: Jasmin Dasović (sound), Alan Vukelić (light), Silvio Vujičić (costume), Ana Ogrizović (hare).

BADco. SEMI-INTERPRETATIONS...

POLUINTERPRETACIJE ili kako objasniti suvremeni ples nemrtvom zecu

04.09.2010. @ HKD na Sušaku, Rijeka

predpremijerna prezentacija u sklopu Zoom festivala Drugog mora
Bruno Latour, Pasterizacija Francuske

Kompozicija i modulacije: Nikolina Pristaš
Bilješke i blackboxing: Goran Sergej Pristaš
Suradnici: Jasmin Dasović (zvuk), Alan Vukelić (svjetlo), Silvio Vujičić (kostim), Ana Ogrizović (zec).

Poluinspirirano radovima: Josepha Beuysa, Francoisea Delsartea, Stevena Shavira, Brune Latoura i Grahama Harmana

10 days 1 unity LAB, 25.10.-03.11.2010 @ MSU, Zagreb

25.10.-03.11.2010 @ Museum of Contemporary Art, Zagreb

daily 11:00 – 14:00 and 16:00 – 19:00

This ten-day laboratory brings together primarily two groups of artists: artists around the 6M1L collective and members of the Zagreb-based performing collective BADco. We will be also joined by a smaller number of other Zagreb-based performers, choreographers, dramaturges and directors.

BADco.’s initial interest for this year in general and this lab in particular was to go back to the ideas and propositions we have been working on while creating our past performances over the years, but we dropped for one reason or another and never had time or opportunity to go back to. We wanted to recuperate our knowledge production left to oblivion, but also focus more generally on issues of centrality of knowledge production, immaterial production or production without products in contemporary performing practices and problems arising from the production process based on rapid expenditure of knowledge through constant pressure to produce the next new.

Participants: Sasa Asentić, Bojana Cvejić, Juan Dominguez, Annie Dorsen, Mette Ingvartsen, Neto Machado, Florian Malzacher, Una Bauer, Marko Kostanić, Sonja Pregrad, Tea Tupajić, Petra Zanki and members of BADco.

10 dana 1 jedinstvo

25.10.-03.11.2010. @ Muzej suvremene umjetnosti, Zagreb

BADco. Point of Convergence 26.-28.11.2010 @ MSU, Zagreb

BADco. continues the celebration of our 10 years together with the premiere of a new choreography by Ana Kreitmeyer and Zrinka Uzbinec!

Point of Convergence

world premiere:
26.11.2010 20:00 @ Museum of Contemporary Art, Zagreb

additional performances:
27.-28.11.2010 22:00 @ Museum of Contemporary Art, Zagreb
(note different time!)

Point of Convergence is a choreographic experiment persisting in the excess where communication in dance and about dance oscillates between what can and what cannot be stated: insisting on choreographic means – structuring the intensity of communication’s noise – producing the specific conditions of dialogue in dance and dialogue on dance. To understand one another, it is necessary to negotiate the terms of understanding.

The authors Zrinka Užbinec and Ana Kreitmeyer implement this negotiation of the terms of understanding, an understanding that is yet to come to understanding, through a series of mutations of dance expressions. A simple initial choreography is communicated to each other through a series of dance negotiations, understandings and misunderstandings through which newly established gestures lose their meaning, and casual glances and signs of a hand become intensities that are changing the context, transforming meanings into an excess.

During this process of “rough” translation the dance expression of one is exposed to a constant and continuous dance interpretation of the other, creating a choreographic situation that is no longer located on the bodies, but between the two bodies. Attempts at negotiation, at translation, misconstructions, explanations one did not request, disagreements, an attempt at coexisting. The point of convergence is left to the spectators’ gaze where, in the illusory distance, two parallel lines intersect at infinity.

BADco. "Point of Convergence", 2010

BADco. nastavlja veliku proslavu 10 godina rada jos jednom premijerom! Nova koreografija Ane Kreitmeyer i Zrinke Užbinec!

Točka sabiranja

praizvedba:
26.11.2010. 20:00 @ Muzej suvremene umjetnosti, Zagreb

reprizne izvedbe:
27.-28.11.2010. 22:00 @ Muzej suvremene umjetnosti, Zagreb

Autorice Zrinka Užbinec i Ana Kreitmeyer to pregovaranje o uvjetima razumijevanja, razumijevanja koje tek treba doći do sporazumijevanja, provode kroz seriju mutacija plesnog izraza. Jednostavnu početnu koreografiju komuniciraju jedna drugoj kroz plesne pregovore, sporazumijevanja i nesporazume tijekom kojih tek uspostavljene geste gube značenja, a povremeni pogledi i znakovi dlana postaju intenziteti koji mijenjaju kontekst, pretvaraju značenja u suvišak.

WORKSHOP Recapitulations 24.-28.01.2011 @ POU Zagreb

BADco. invites you to take part in our choreographic workshop!

Recapitulations

24.-28.01.2011 10:00-14:30 @ POU Zagreb, Ulica Grada Vukovara 68, Zagreb

Leading the workshop: Ana Kreitmeyer, Nikolina Pristaš, Goran Sergej Pristaš and Zrinka Užbinec

In our ten years of work, throughout a series of theater productions, BADco. has alternated thematic scopes, dramaturgical approaches, dance procedures and technological processes. And yet, in this continuous production of the divergent, some strategies in the making of our productions and some operations in their performance have stayed constant and have gradually sedimented into knowledge BADco. conveys through workshops. The workshop Recapitulations will focus on the choreographic procedures, production of dance and analysis. We will spend a week investigating: different ways the body and the (virtual) objects relate, the possibilities of choreographic exhausting of that relationship, the settling in of dance into a world of objects and the analysis of the whole process. Extension of objects in the body, introduction of objects’ qualities into the body, traces, configuration of attention, inertia, parallel logics in the body – are only some of the ideas we will cover in the workshop.

Recapitulations workshop is for dance professionals and those who wish to experience and reflect on the process of creating a choreography.

Participation is free of charge. Apply by 21.01.2011 to:

In collaboration with ekscena.

BADco.

Rekapitulacije

24.-28.01.2011. 10:00-14:30 @ Centar za kulturu POU Zagreb, Ulica Grada Vukovara 68, Zagreb

Voditelji radionice: Ana Kreitmeyer, Nikolina Pristaš, Goran Sergej Pristaš i Zrinka Užbinec

Ostvareno u suradnji s ekscenom.

SYMPOSIUM, Workshops, Exhibition 01.-05. April 2011 – Algorithmic Reflections of Choreography: From Choreography to Software and Back

SYMPOSIUM: Algorithmic Reflections of Choreography: From Choreography to Software and Back (1 April 2011, Zagreb)

– followed by four days of workshops and installations of The Forsythe Company’s Synchronous Objects and BADco.’s Whatever Dance Toolbox - click here for more info on the workshops!

Open Call for Presentations

Who can apply: If you are a dancer, choreographer or an expert working with choreography interested in developing or reflecting on the application of software tools in choreographic work and teaching, we are inviting you to present your insights and research interests, and participate in the debates, at our symposium “Algorithmic Reflections of Choreography: From Choreography to Software and Back”.

When and where: The symposium will take place on 1 April 2011 in Zagreb, Croatia.

What are the topics: The purpose of the symposium is to bring together in a not-too-formal setting international artists, technologists, methodologists and educators who have been working on developing software tools in the context of choreographic work in order to discuss following issues:

  • how can such technological tools support the creation process;
  • what effects can they have on dance performances;
  • what knowledge can they produce and transfer;
  • how can they be used in documenting/archiving/preserving dance works;
  • can we detect traces of digital environments in choreographies that were not made with technological tools.

The symposium will include contributions by developers and practitioners working on tools developed for The Forsythe Company, Emio Greco | PC, Deborah Hay Company and BADco.

The symposium marks the release of BADco.’s choreographic software suite Whatever Dance Toolbox, created in collaboration with the German developer Daniel Turing. It will be followed by four days of workshops and installations of The Forsythe Company’s Synchronous Objects, facilitated by Norah Zuniga Shaw, and BADco.’s Whatever Dance Toolbox, facilitated by choreographers and dramaturges of BADco.

How to apply and when is the deadline: We are looking for contributions of various formats, including but not limited to short presentations, demonstrations and participation in the debate. If you want to participate in the symposium, please send us a short note stating your topical interests, discussion points, format, etc. and a short description of your background. While we cannot cover your expenses, we can help you find convenient travel arrangement and affordable accommodation, and we will do our best to address your interests and provide an insightful debate.

All proposals should be sent in by February 20th to:

Participants experience the deep structures and creative scoring ideas contained within William Forsythe’s masterwork A One Flat Thing, reproduced through movement and drawing exercises. Themes that are addressed include rule-based art making practices, integration of analytical and creative practices, and connections between computing ideas and dancing ideas. In addition to generating moving ideas, participants are given tools for analyzing performance throughout the workshop, and using these observations and documents as jumping off points for new creation.

Norah Zuniga Shaw is an artist and researcher whose work centers on choreographic knowledge as a locus for interdisciplinary and intercultural creativity. She is director for dance & technology at the Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design (ACCAD). Shaw’s most recent project with William Forsythe and Maria Palazzi, Synchronous Objects, has received numerous honors including features in the New York Times and Communication Arts.

BADco. @ 54. La Biennale di Venezia, 04.06. – 27.11. 2011

By invitation of the curators’ collective What, How & for Whom/WHW the Croatian exhibition at the 54th Venice Biennale taking place 4th June to 27th November 2011 will present the work of conceptual artist Antonio G. Lauer (a.k.a. Tom Gotovac) and performing arts collective BADco.

BADco. at the 54th Venice Biennale

4th June > 27th November 2011

As part of the Croatian exhibition at the 54th Venice Biennale BADco. will present a site-specific installation and intervention under the working title Responsibility for Things Seen, the first phase of a multi-segment project we will conclude with a premiere at the Zagreb Youth Theater in early 2012.

We are inspired by the fact that our work will be presented alongside the work of Tomislav Gotovac, an artist with whom we share an intuition that there is a continuity between seeing and creating, and an interest for the internal material organization of the artistic reality – what the artist had called “the steel mash”.

The exhibition organized by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia will be realized in collaboration with Croatian film clubs’ association and Zagreb Youth Theater, exhibition design will be lead by architect Ana Martina Bakić, while visual materials will be designed by member of WHW collective Dejan Kršić.

Toma Gotovca) i izvedbene skupine BADco.

BADco. na 54. venecijanskom bijenalu

4. lipnja do 27. studenoga 2011.

Whatever Dance Toolbox is now released!

Whatever Dance Toolbox is a set of software tools designed for the analysis and development of dance and movement. Six tools included in the suite can help dancers and choreographers devise, develop and rehearse dance, but can also be used in dance education or by non-dancers to explore movement. The suite is a product of a long-standing collaboration between BADco. and German human-machine interface developer and artist Daniel Turing, and it reflects some of the mutual concerns with the dancer-computer interaction and choreographic thinking.

Free download here!

Detailed introduction and instructions can be found in our Whatever Dance Toolbox – Manual.
