WORKSHOP: Anders Paulin @ Academy of Dramatic Art, Zagreb, 02.-06.12.2018

BADco. is happy to again host Anders Paulin for a student workshop in Zagreb as a part of our continuous activities of the artistic research process City, Labor in the framework of the project Labor of panic that brings together BADco. with a younger generation of artists, thematizing and making visible the topic of unproductive labor in society and in the arts.

Anders Paulin

Dramaturgy of the Verticality

02.-06.12.2018 @ Academy of Dramatic Art, Zagreb

The workshop will be attended by the students of dramaturgy and dance from the Academy of Dramatic Art in Zagreb and students of acting and media from the Academy of Applied Arts in Rijeka accompanied by Nataša Antulov as a continuation of BADco.’s collaboration with the two academic institutions.

The workshop will engage with the figure of the double as a relation between the self and the other. Taking departure in some notions from the poetic imagery of German poet Friedrich Hölderlin, we will look into different perspectives on dramaturgy as an organization of the rhythm between what-is and what-is-not.

Anders Paulin has directed 30+ productions at theatres including Nationaltheatret in Oslo, Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg, Stockholm City Theatre, Theater Basel and The Royal Theatre in Copenhagen. Non-mimetic protocols and performative tools are a recurring thematic figure in his work, with a focus on narrative and the performer as interface and medium. He has been teaching regularily at Uniarts in Stockholm, The Danish School of Performing Arts, and KhiO in Oslo. The last couple of years Anders Paulin has been working on the accumulative archive/performance Three White Soldiers together with Johan Forsman. The publication Twin Figure of Mimesis, a collection of essays written in dialogue with Bojana Cvejić, Benjamin Noys, Goran Sergej Pristaš, Peggy Phelan and Austin Gross will be released in November 2018 by Skogen, Gothenburg.

We thank the the Academy of Dramatic Art in Zagreb for support.

Labor of panic is a three-year choreographic research and production process by Zagreb's performance collective BADco. that takes its cue from the work done to prevent emergencies and disasters. This pre-emptive work stands in a paradoxical relation to production – by pre-empting the need for emergency response, it is aimed at producing negation. The title Labor of Panic echoes the title of Paul Virilio’s City of Panic, where Virilio, analyzing the city as a target of terror and as a fulcrum of securitization, draws comparisons between the logic of creation without creation in art and in society at large. While the terrorism produces events as disasters, as ruptures of continuity, the work of securitization produces a double negation, a negation of negation, almost an aesthetic operation on the surface of the city that is made transparent, sanitized and surveilled - the city that constructs panic by policing public space, segregating social groups, fencing off immigrants, redistributing bodies in space. As the work of securitization grows, so grows the generalized insecurity in society – unstable employment, imaginary threats, disaster scenarios... All this transforms the city in the present into an unusual confluence of museal and theatrical dispositives – a spectated and curated theater of operations.

Our artistic approach to the securitization of the city will be based on various forms of analysis of organization of bodies in space and social choreography. We wish to make these opaque processes and relations visible by playing with their temporal dimensions. A potential emergency becomes a construct that emerges from the work of its prevention. That construction we intend to explore by engaging with emergency scenarios, response protocols and response units – such as firefighters, paramedics and rescue operations. The project unfolds in two tracks – production track and workshop, research and residency track, and includes a number of mostly younger artists – dancers, choreographers, actors, dramaturges and visual artists.

The project Labor of panic by BADco. and Drugo more is realized in the framework of the Rijeka 2020 - European Capital of Culture flagship Dopolavoro, with support by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia and Zagreb's City Office for Culture. The work of BADco. is supported by the Foundation Kultura Nova.
