Institutions Need to be Constructed is a hybrid format of a film set, performance and temporary residence placed inside deserted factories or unfinished public buildings - spaces that used to be sites of industrial production and these days may become cultural centers, spaces that through culture celebrated the industrial age in utopistic ways. By reconstructing scenes from three of BADco.'s performances Institutions Need to be Constructed examine the tension between labor and art in our recent history, symptomatically evident in the incomplete state of the three buildings. The first part of the trilogy was realized in September 2015 in former factory Rikard Benčić in Rijeka, the second takes place on 27. February 2016 at the Youth Center in Split in collaboration with Platforma 9,81. The third installment is realized at POGON – Zagreb Center for Independent Culture and Youth, the former factory Jedinstvo, with an installation presented at Gallery Nova as part of the exhibition Day by Day.

The second part of the cycle held in Split refers to two historical art projects - Konstantin Melnikov's Sonata of Sleep and the film Arme Leute by Vlado Kristl. This part starts from the rejection and suspension of work in relation to free time, time of rest and contemplation. While sleeplessness once characterized a bohemian lifestyle of an artist, the constant pressures of work and consumption today devour the time for sleep and an average sleep time of the urban inhabitant has been shortened from ten to six hours. This performance event / filming will engage film extras who'll work performing situations of rest and sleep, as well as a reconstruction of mass scenes from Vlado Kristl's film Arme Leute in which the mass of revolutionaries lie in city streets and squares, sometimes dead, sometimes awake. The visual material will for the most part consist of staged scenes of participatory art and performances of scenes from BADco. productions with extras portraying a mass of active viewers and the works of guest artists. The performances include up to 50 paid extras whose status will be twofold, on the one hand they will be paid workers to work on the film, on the other spectators of a cultural event. This will open up space to thematize the labor by watching and activation. The events include discussions on the social and economic aspects of artistic labor, the task of productivity, and valorization of artistic work through non-aesthetic spheres of social production. The discussions will include the participation of artists and cultural workers, cultural studies researchers and analysts who will reflect on the position of culture in the social system, on new institutional models and problems of institutionalization of contemporary art practices.

We invite all interested to join us with their sleeping bags in the action of sleeping at the Cinema Concrete of the Youth Center in Split on 27. February 2016, 21:00 - 24:00.

Join us also for the discussions in Split and Zagreb! On Saturday 05. March 2016 we'll present the video installation Stasis at the Gallery Nova - with excerpts of the previous evening's discussions and reconstructed scenes of workers leaving the factory and workers in stasis in the abandoned factory Rikard Benčić.
